Selection criteria example 1

SC 1
Demonstrated high level of interpersonal and written communication skills including the ability to negotiate, influence and coordinate projects.

With a work career spanning over 10 years I have worked in a number of positions, requiring high levels of interpersonal and written communication skills, including working as a solicitor, a legal editor and a marketing/communications officer.

At White & Case Limited Liability Partnership, I worked as Marketing Officer for a specialist group of partners involved in global project finance.  One of my key responsibilities was to manage the development of a global intranet site for the project finance group.  The purpose of the intranet site was to make available to all global offices, key information relating to business development and marketing of the group.

To ensure the timely and seamless management of the process, I obtained appropriate senior management approval for the site and feedback from key global partners as to content.  It was also necessary to obtain cooperation from central business development, members of business development around the network, and finance information, in order to avoid duplication, appoint editors and obtain relevant material for the site.  It also involved successfully negotiating with the director of IT as to resources for the site, including SQL script, development of an appropriate database, security measures and global publication of the site.  I also persuaded a team of reluctant paralegals and law clerks to assist in the production of documents and in the proofreading of the site.

I received extremely favourable comments and feedback as to content, layout and useability of the site.  The information on the site made a positive contribution to the business development and marketing of the group, including:

  • Streamlining the global bid process, by ensuring improved brand consistency across all offices and the avoidance of duplication in effort, with a library of bid precedents previously unavailable to business development and partners.
  • The provision of timely access to job leads, which resulted in White & Case inning new business.
  • Global access to information bibles and templates, which significantly improved the international information service at White & Case, with 24 hour access to the vital material across all offices in the Americas, Latin America, Asia, Indian Sub-Continent, Middle East and Europe.

At Amerada Heines, I worked as a contract solicitor assigned to review the Network Code, which was the legal framework and industry standard for the privatisation of the downstream gas sector in the United Kingdom.  The role also involved negotiating with British Gas the Claim Validation Agreement, an essential reporting system under the balancing regime of the Code.  A crucial element of the role was report writing, to ensure management and in-house lawyers were kept up to speed with relevant issues and problems and were aware of the necessary steps to ensure compliance under the new balancing regime.

Based on my clear written advice contained in the reports, management and in-house lawyers took the necessary steps to ensure compliance under the code and avoided costly penalties associated with non-compliance under the new regime.

I’m confident that my communication and interpersonal skills, will enable me to successfully manage complex communication projects within the Department.

Selection criteria example 2

SC 2
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, with minimum supervision on complex tasks.

I have worked in a number of positions that have required me to work both autonomously and within a teamwork environment, including working as a editor/legal writer, and as a member of a grants team, distributing lottery funding to charities.

At Blue Ribbon Publishing Limited, I worked as an editor and legal writer.  The publication I worked on was ‘Case-Base’, an online resource for the legal profession, including judges, barristers, academics, students and law firms. The role involved the close analysis of recent judgements and articles, along with the precise categorisation and summary of issues pertinent to the legal profession.  I was also responsible for the editing of the final product online.  This was a highly autonomous role in which as a writer, I alone was responsible for the whole process, including critical judgement of the case, and ensuring accurate and timely input of a vast amount of material onto the system.

Pink Ribbon often received unsolicited compliments as to the quality of work and timely input of material.  The quality of the product was one of the major reasons as to the substantial increase of online subscriptions by the legal profession.

At National Lottery Charities Board (NLCB), I worked as a Grants Officer.  The role involved the assessment of complex applications made to NLCB from Charities and Benevolent organisations in the London wide region.  I was also responsible for the grant management of funds to organisations successful in their applications to the NLCB.   Working with limited supervision, I successfully assessed hundreds of complex applications and managed grants, in line with operational policy and procedures.

My capacity to work autonomously on complex grant tasks was acknowledged in my performance review, in which my manager noted the following “Robert excels in managing complex grants without supervision and her intelligent approach to resolving problems makes her an integral and important member of the team”. (Performance appraisal available for inspection upon request).
