The jobs of tomorrow

With unemployment rapidly rising in Australia and a job market that is becoming very competitive, the question you should ask, is not only how you get a job, but identifying those jobs of the future.

This article is not a definitive overview and you should be aware, that statistics and projection on growing and diminishing occupational fields might prove to be inaccurate.  However, there are certain trends, which could affect jobs, which in turn will enable you to make better career choices for yourself for the future. Is starting a small business for you?

I love running my own business, and in my current frame of mind, I’m probably unemployable, as I would not take orders from the boss too kindly.

What I love about running my own business, is that I’m my own boss, I’m in charge of my destiny, I get to write these articles in my pyjamas with a hot water bottle, if I’m bored, I just change my own job description and in the last five years, I’ve never stopped learning.

However, the self-employed lifestyle does have its limitations.  I don’t get holiday pay or sick leave.  With my background and qualifications in law and marketing I get paid less than if I worked for someone else, my income fluctuates from week to week and just occasionally, it would be nice to get the opportunity to wear the corporate suit and heels, rather than wear the pyjamas and jeans.

So before starting a small business, it is important to ascertain whether this working lifestyle is really for you. More....

Feeling underpaid? Here's why and what to do about it

As a nation, Australian’s are working harder than ever, with an increase of working hours and in 2002, only 39 per cent of Australians took their full four-week holiday entitlement.

In spite of working harder, Australian’s also feel like they are being underpaid, with a large majority of job seekers looking for a new job, as a result of inadequate compensation.

So are Australians really being underpaid, or simply think they are being underpaid? More....

Busting the education and training myth

Education and training is BIG business.  So big, that millions is spent on television advertising to entice new clients and millions more is spent on newspaper advertisements.

But do you really need additional education and training to succeed in today’s job market?

Well the answer is yes, no and maybe. More....

What the experts are saying:

“What a uniquely honest, positive, and optimistic perspective on coping with job loss. I think that anyone who has ever lost a job through redundancy, termination, and/or resignation could relate to this. I only wish that I’d been able to access this resource myself when I was made redundant a few years ago. I particularly enjoyed the section on learning how to take rejection gracefully and can firmly attest to the power of positive thought. Well done, Carolyn….another superb resource!”  - Nikky Rhodes, Job winning Resume and Selection Criteria Specialist, Careerpro www.careerpro.net.au

“Too often when we lose a job there is little attention paid to the emotional elements of this experience. We are expected to pull up our bootstraps and make the best of it, virtually sweeping our emotions under the rug. However, by not confronting it and creating a real and strategic action plan for overcoming this life-changing event, we can be thrown into a depressing cycle of failure – to find a new job, to recover from the experience, and to recoup our financial worth. Career Expert, Carolyn Smith of Impact Writing Services and CareerDIY has created a brilliant, motivating 24-page white paper entitled Rebuilding After Job Loss, which provides effective information and action plans to help any job seeker regain his or her personal power to go back into the job market fit to win. It’s truly worth a read and will have you thinking, hoping, and taking action.”  Laura DeCarlo, President, Career Directors International www.careerdirectors.com

"Congratulations Carolyn! This report is the ultimate resource that provides exceptional advice to assist anyone getting back on their feet after a job loss. Whether you have lost your job without any warning, or whether you knew it was imminent, it is likely to involve shock and disbelief. ‘Rebuilding After a Job Loss’ focuses on the emotional elements of job loss, how to build your self-esteem and how you can set powerful goals to gain the confidence needed to begin applying for jobs. Carolyn speaks from her own experiences and shares with you ideas on how to cope and survive a job loss and how to thrive emotionally. This is truly a comprehensive top-notch resource".
